Hossein Ensan (born May 22, 1964) is an Iranian-German professional poker player from Münster, Germany. In 2019, he won the Main Event at the World Series of Poker for $10,000,000.

Ensan was born in Iran and moved to Germany at the age of 25, in 1989. There, he studied civil engineering at the University of Munster. But being unable to pay his bills, especially at the time he was founding a family, he could not go all the way to obtain his diploma. He started working small jobs, such as a taxi driver, waiter, and painter.[1] He then managed to start a taxi business in 2002, buying three cars, and had enough time to start his poker career. This was quite a late start, Ensan being 39 at that time. However he declared that he knew the rules of poker since he played five-card draw when he was a kid.[2]

Jul 17, 2019 Hossein Ensan beat out 8,568 other competitors to win the $10 million first-place prize in the 2019 World Series of Poker's main event on Wednesday morning.

In August 2014, Ensan won the seniors event at the European Poker Tour's Barcelona festival, then a week later he finished third out of 1,496 players in the Main Event for €652,000.[3] He also made the final table at EPT Malta in March 2015, finishing in sixth. Finally, he made his third EPT final table in Prague that December and won the tournament for €754,000.[4]

Ensan won a WSOP circuit ring in Rozvadov, Czech Republic in 2017. He had just one WSOP cash prior to the 2019 Main Event, in the Colossus event at the WSOP Europe in 2017.[5]

Ensan emigrated from his native Iran to Germany in 1990 and began traveling and competing in poker tournaments around 2004, though it wasn't until 2013 that he began booking significant cashes. Hossein Ensan has built an impressive poker resume in a relatively short poker career. The 55-year-old poker pro won the 2019 World Series of Poker Main Event, adding a $10 million payday to his career tournament earnings total. The 2019 Main Event wasn’t the first major championship win for Ensan, however. 55-year-old Hossein Ensan of Germany was crowned the 2019 World Series of Poker Main Event champion and for that win, he received a paycheck of $10 MILLION as well as a gold WSOP winner’s bracelet covered in diamonds. Hossein is already an accomplished professional poker player, going into the 2019 WSOP Main Event he had already won. At the 2019 Main Event, Ensan entered the final table with the chip lead at 177,000,000, more than a third of the chips in play. On the 301st hand of the final table, he defeated Dario Sammartino heads-up with KK against the 84 of Sammartino. His opponent check-raised all in on a 10269 board and Ensan quickly called. Sammartino, a high roller regular and one of the best poker players in the world, said that Ensan played better during the heads-up. At age 55, Ensan became the oldest Main Event champion since Noel Furlong in 1999 and the second German champion after Pius Heinz in 2011.[6][7]

As of January 2020, Ensan's total live earnings exceed $13,000,000.

After 13 total sessions of action, the WSOP’s marquee tournament came to a close on July 17. When just three players from a starting field of 8,569 were left, all eyes were on one man.

Leading the start of the final table, Germany’s Ensan was described as a “sure bet” before the action got underway. Holding almost 63 percent of the chips in play, only a blow-up or the poker gods could have rewritten the script.

Ensan Starts WSOP Finale Fast

When the cards were in the air and chips started to fly, Ensan picked up where he left off. Putting Italy’s Dario Sammartino to the test, the chip leader needed his sixes to hold one time.

But despite his previous post-flop prowess, it was Sammartino who caught a break. Risking it all with AJ, the Italian jumped for joy as the Q on the river gave him a straight.

Now back in contention, it was time for Sammartino to go on the offensive and Ensan to recoil. In fact, that backwards step also appeared to give the other finalist, Alex Livingston, a lift.

Sensing his shot at a WSOP title wasn’t over, the Canadian started to push the pace. With two players now taking aim at Ensan, the sure bet was starting to look a little shaky.

Showing AQ, Ensan needed to avoid an upset to retain the chip lead. As the board ran out 6JQ29, Livingston exited stage-left as the dealer pushed the pot to Ensan.

Heads-up, both players had opportunities to win. Unfortunately, for Sammartino, a victory for Ensan seemed inevitable.

Applying pressure from the start, the 55-year-old finally got it done with pocket kings. Just over nine hours into the final session, Ensan slow-played his pair until Sammartino made a mistake.

Moving all-in on the turn with 84, the young Italian needed help to survive. As the river card was dealt, the T629Q board left Sammartino without any hope and Ensan with all the chips.
